Canada Post to Expand Community Mailbox Conversion in 2027

TORONTO, June 12, 2026 – Canada Post announced on June 11 that in 2027 it will convert about 485,000 addresses in 37 communities across the country from door-to-door delivery to community mailbox delivery. In Ontario, affected communities include Ajax, Brampton, Hawkesbury, Kitchener, London, Mississauga, Ottawa and Pickering, with about 158,000 addresses affected. Canada Post said residents will receive notice before the conversion, as well as the location and keys for their community mailbox before the delivery method changes.

The change will have a more direct impact on Chinese seniors, residents with mobility limitations, newcomer families living in detached homes, and people who frequently receive government or medical mail. For some households, picking up mail is not simply a matter of walking a few extra steps each day. Tax, immigration, hospital appointment, school and insurance letters may affect response deadlines or follow-up procedures if they are not checked in time.

Canada Post said community mailbox conversions usually take several months. It will communicate with local governments on location selection and notify residents during the process. Community mailboxes are maintained by Canada Post, including snow clearing, repairs and lock replacement. Most parcels can be placed in individual mailbox compartments or parcel compartments. Parcels that do not fit or require a signature may be delivered to the door or held at a nearby post office for pickup.

For people with mobility limitations, the most important step is not to wait until the mailbox conversion has already been completed before asking for help. Canada Post has a Delivery Accommodation Program that provides free support for households with functional limitations. Options may include easier-to-use mailbox compartments, sliding trays, Braille features, or, in some cases, seasonal, temporary or long-term weekly door-to-door delivery. Residents can apply after receiving notice of their new community mailbox location.

This change does not mean all door-to-door delivery will be cancelled immediately, nor does it mean every address in each city will be converted at the same time. Which street, postal code or address will be affected, and when the change will take place, will still depend on further notices from Canada Post. Newcomer families who only glance at the English letter title but do not read details about key pickup, mailbox location or accommodation applications may miss important steps.

A more realistic concern is that some seniors rely on adult children to help handle government letters, but their children may not know that the delivery method is about to change. If an older adult has difficulty walking to a community mailbox or may struggle to pick up mail in winter, the household should contact Canada Post soon after receiving notice, instead of waiting until mail piles up or becomes difficult to retrieve.

Residents in affected communities should watch for letters from Canada Post and keep records of mailbox locations, keys and application numbers. Families with seniors or people with mobility limitations should also discuss in advance who will be responsible for picking up mail, how parcel pickup will be handled, and whether delivery accommodation should be requested.(LJI by Yuanyuan)
